Seeking God > Vocational Information > What It Takes > Types of Monasteries

Now that you have decided to try your hand at a monastic vocation you need to decide which type to pursue. There are two main groups: the active and the non-active, or "contemplative." In the end all monks are contemplative by nature.

The "active" Benedictines might have a school, a parish or a large retreat facility, and these apostolates have been part of the monastic tradition for centuries. Then there are the monasteries that lead a more simple life style with no outside apostolates. Such a life style is followed at the Monastery Christ in the Desert. Our daily routine consists of work and prayer. Our guesthouse, which provides for private retreats, is our outreach to the world, even though most of the brothers do not become involved with the guests.

Once you have come to a decision as to the type of monastery you want to join you should take a look to see what's out there. There are many monasteries in this country to choose from. Your local diocese can provide you with vocational material. You might also search further on the Web.

Perhaps you think that Christ in the Desert is the monastery to which God is calling you. What will happen to you once you knock at our door asking to be admitted? Formation.
